My first employment, post formal school education in Northern Ireland, was with Stephen Revess Associates, a firm of Consulting Structural Engineers based in London, joining as a trainee draftsman in 1979.  With the practice I progressed with training to become an Incorporated Structural Engineer rising to the position of Associate. After 11 rewarding years with the firm and following the birth of our baby daughter, my wife and I made the move to Cornwall in 1990.   On arrival in Cornwall, I took up the position of Senior Structural Engineer in a practice in Truro followed by a one year position with an Architectural Practice.   In December 1991, with the support of my wife, I took the plunge and started up my own Engineering Practice, Structural Design Workshop, based in St.Agnes, to provide structural/civil engineering and project management services to the private, public and commercial sectors of the construction industry.   The firm progressed successfully for the following 14 years with a clear commitment to maintaining and expanding the excellent working relationships established with our clients, other building professionals, local and national authorities. Successful projects covered residential, education, healthcare, commercial, community and leisure projects.  I was highly privileged to be involved in many local mining heritage, conservation and community projects specific to Cornwall which have and continue to give me enormous personal satisfaction.   In 2005 we agreed to sell the firm to one of our primary Clients at that time, the Truro based residential developer Highgrove Homes.   The company retained my services as structural engineer and as technical advisor to the group’s development and contracting operations and with whom successful residential developments were completed throughout the southwest comprising both open market and affordable housing schemes. Unfortunately, during difficult economic circumstances and after many successful years of trading, Highgrove Homes went into voluntary liquidation in 2010.

In 2010 I became one of the founding directors of 3MS Construction Ltd based in Threemilestone, Truro.  As technical director I was specifically responsible for the full design and technical management of all projects to achieve the necessary performance standards and to directly liaise with clients, consultants, statutory authorities and the construction team. A major element of the business was the successful delivery of numerous design and build contracts for both private housing developers and social housing providers.  This experience included the successful delivery of schemes for several of the local and national housing associations.   In my career roles to date as structural engineer, technical director and technical design co-ordinator/manager, I have been fully engaged in the successful delivery of over 500 high quality open market dwellings together with some 280 affordable dwellings - the majority of which have been delivered in Cornwall.   Volunteering & Adding Social Value   Although I am a self-confessed workaholic – I have sought to assist my local community through donations and no fee design advice and technical support where possible.  As a family we have and continue to be committed to supporting Macmillan Cancer Care and The Island Haven charitable appeal.
